People's Reformation Party Launches Ahead of Manipur Assembly Elections

The newly registered People’s Reformation Party (PRP) formally announced its formation on Thursday ahead of the 2027 Manipur assembly elections. The Election Commission of India ’s official website currently lists the PRP as a registered, unrecognised political party in the state. The party was launched amid the continuing aftermath of the ethnic conflict that began in May 2023. Its 13-point manifesto focuses on peace, public order, territorial integrity, a “gun-free Manipur” and the welfare of internally displaced persons. At the party’s inaugural press interaction, PRP president Mangsatabam Andy said political change requires better governance and qualified representatives rather than simply new political faces. He said the party plans to field new candidates in 40 valley constituencies after a due-diligence process. Andy said party membership would remain open, while candidate selection would be selective and subject to public scrutiny. Manipur has 60 assembly seats. The PRP has also promised transparency in political funding, measurable results instead of rhetoric and measures to discourage elected representatives from switching parties for political gain. On governance and resources, Andy rejected the view that Manipur lacks sufficient resources. He attributed the state’s problems to administrative inefficiencies and said they could be addressed through responsible governance. Andy also ruled out pre-poll and post-poll coalitions. He said the PRP would sit in the opposition if it does not secure an absolute majority.
