Police have stepped up naka checking in the district since the announcement of the assembly election day. Lakhs of cash were recovered from a car near the city centre of New Town on Friday morning. Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate along with police from Ecopark Police Station conducted a raid near New Town City Centre on Friday morning. An app cab was intercepted. According to police sources, Suresh Thakur was driving the car. Suresh hails from Gujarat. The search recovered Rs 25 lakh from the vehicle. Suresh Thakur has been arrested for failing to show proper proof or documents about the source of the money. Notably, two days ago, during a naka search in Alipurduar district, a large amount of cash was recovered. Police spotted a car with Assam number plates. The vehicle was stopped and searched. Police recovered bundles of Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes from the car. A total of Rs 2 lakh 75 thousand was recovered by the police. The driver of the car was arrested for failing to show proper proof or documents about the source of the money. In March last year, the West Bengal State Election Commission had issued a model code of conduct for transportation of cash of Rs 50,000 or more.
