Protesters and police clashed in Kolkata on Saturday demanding the release of Bangladeshi Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das. Activists of various Hindutva organisations, saints and activists of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) were marching towards the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Bekbagan. Police had set up barricades to stop them. Protesters tried to break through the barricades put up near the Deputy High Commission. They were heckled by police. After being stopped by the police, the protesters squatted on the road and shouted slogans demanding the immediate release of Chinmoy Krishna Das. The protesters allege that the Hindu saint has been detained without a proper trial for a long time. An NCPI activist claimed that Chinmoy Krishna Das had not participated in any violence and had to seek parole to attend the funeral of his mother. Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also scheduled to be released in 2024, is a political dissident of the NCP registered with the Bangladesh Nationalist Congress Party.
