Developed by Robo Mirror, a company based out of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, the humanoid robot has been specially designed to assist in public events. Robo Mirror representative Kaushik said, "Nila is an interactive machine. She is not only welcoming but can also talk on her own. We can give her commands and she is guiding voters in English as well as Tamil." Polling began as early as 7 am in Puducherry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also appealed to the people of Puducherry through social media to vote in record numbers. He specifically asked women and young voters to come forward to strengthen the democratic process. The hi-tech welcome created a festive atmosphere at the polling stations.
