PVR INOX Refuses Cash Payment, Sparks Debate Over Legal Tender

A person who went to watch a movie at PVR INOX has an argument with the multiplex. The customer says that the theater refused to accept cash at the movie ticket and food counter. The confusion over payment became a matter of conversation. This incident has raised the question whether one can refuse to accept legal tender (legally valid currency) as payment for business service. The case is of PVR INOX at Palladium Mall in Ahmedabad. A lawyer of Gujarat High Court has sent a legal notice to the multiplex for refusing to accept cash at the ticket and food counter here and pressing for payment only from UPI. Advocate Utkarsh Dave from Ahmedabad went to watch the movie on 13 September 2026. He alleged that the staff at the ticket counter and later at the food and beverage counter flatly refused to accept payment in cash from him and only paid through UPI. According to the Times of India report, Utkarsh said that he had no legal notice from UPI after that day.
