Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Thursday appointed some newly elected members of the Upper House to various parliamentary committees. Radhakrishnan nominated Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and chairpersons of some parliamentary committees to the General Purposes Committee. The task of this committee is to consider and advise on matters relating to the business of the House which are referred to it by the Chairman from time to time. The Chairman of this committee is Radhakrishnan himself. The General Purposes Committee consists of the Chairman, the Deputy Chairman, members of the panel of Deputy Chairpersons, chairpersons of all Parliamentary Standing Committees of the Rajya Sabha, leaders of recognised parties and groups in the Rajya Sabha and other members nominated by the Chairman. The Chairman also nominated M. Thambi Durai (AIADMK), who is on the panel of Deputy Chairpersons, in addition to Kharge. Among the chairpersons of the Parliamentary Standing Committees, Mukul Wasnik (Congress), Tiruchi Siva (DMK), Medha Vishram Kulkarni (BJP), Laxman Chadda (BJP), Ranjith Ranjan (BJD) and Ranjith Ranjan (BJP) are also included in the General Purposes Committee.
