Rajya Sabha Elections: BJP Set to Win All Four Seats from Gujarat

Four Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat are up for election on 18 June. The last date for nominations is 8 June. Neither the Bharatiya Janata Party nor the Congress has announced their candidates yet. According to BJP sources, the names have been finalised in the parliamentary board meeting and the preparations for nominations are complete. The candidates are likely to be announced on 6 June. The total strength of the Gujarat Assembly is 181. The BJP has 161 MLAs, while the Congress has 12 and the AAP has 4. One AAP MLA has been expelled and there are two independents. The number of votes required to win a Rajya Sabha seat is about 37. The BJP is set to win all four seats as it has far more than the majority. The opposition Congress or the AAP cannot field candidates. This will completely eliminate Congress's Rajya Sabha representation from Gujarat. Gujarat was not a separate state during the first Rajya Sabha elections. The number of seats from Bombay was 17, from Saurashtra to Kutch in 1952. The number of permanent seats in Bombay State has remained unchanged since 1956. The number of Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat is 273 as of today. The number of seats in the state has remained unchanged since 1960.
