Supreme Court Directs Election Commission to List Matter on Trinamool Congress Symbol Dispute

The Election Commission had on Friday allocated separate names and symbols to the rival factions of Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee. A day earlier, the commission in its interim order had restrained both the factions from using the name All India Trinamool Congress and frozen the party symbol till a final decision was taken on the dispute. In her petition filed in the Supreme Court, Banerjee has made the Election Commission and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee respondents. On September 18, Banerjee had criticised the EC's decision to freeze the name and symbol of the Trinamool Congress. She had compared the loss of the party's identity to the pain of losing a child to her mother and described it as a "black day in the country's history" and that Banerjee would not accept it as the party's "true identity."
