Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran Resigns Amid Lack of Consensus on Tenure Extension

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has resigned from his post and he has made it clear that he will not run for the post again after his current term ends on 20 February 2027. The main reason for his sudden resignation is the lack of consensus on his tenure extension in the board of Tata Sons and strategic differences with Noel Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts. N Chandrasekaran told in his official statement that Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had recommended his tenure to be extended for another 5 years. This proposal was put forward in the board meeting of Tata Sons held on 24 February 2026, but a member of the board did not support it. According to the tradition and rules of the Tata Group, such a big decision would not have been taken without consensus, due to which Chandrasekaran himself had requested to postpone this decision. Even after 6 months have passed. According to sources, No consensus could be reached on this decision after the death of Noel Tata in 2024.
