Tawde headed the Vidyarthi Parishad in more than a dozen districts, including Gorakhpur, Jaunpur, Ballia, and Varanasi during that period. He led several student movements. During this time, he was identified as a struggling youth leader at the organisational level. Early organisational experience in Uttar Pradesh gave his political journey a strong foundation and he went on to take on larger responsibilities in the BJP. Tawde, who hails from the Maratha community, became active in Maharashtra politics in the 90s. In 1995, he was made the general secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh BJP. He then became the youngest president of the Mumbai BJP in 1999. In 2014, he contested the assembly elections for the first time and served as a cabinet minister in the BJP government from 2014 to 2019. During this time, he made his mark in state politics. Tawde was denied a ticket from the Borivali seat in the western suburbs of Mumbai in the 2019 assembly elections. Thereafter, he distanced himself from electoral politics and made his mark in the organisation's work. He served as the co-convener of Draupadi Murmu's management committee in the presidential election and as the BJP's in-Haryana elections.
