Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal Convicted of Rape by Bombay High Court

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday convicted former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal in a rape case. The court sentenced him to 10 years in jail. The court asked him to surrender in 2 weeks. Earlier in May 2021, a trial court in Goa had acquitted Tejpal for lack of evidence. The case then went to the High Court. The case dates back to November 2013. The female Tehelka journalist had alleged that Tarun Tejpal sexually assaulted her twice in a hotel elevator on the night of 7 and 8 November during a think fest in Goa. On the High Court's decision, Tejpal said, "We are very disappointed with the verdict. We will go to the Supreme Court 354. Some people have been after me for 13 years with Tehelka and political vendetta. We fought the case in the trial court for 7 and a half years and were acquitted." The High Court held that the trial court paid more attention to the victim's behaviour after the incident than to the evidence.
