IPS Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta have been suspended by the state government in the RG Kar case for alleged dereliction of duty. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said that a departmental inquiry will be conducted against the three. Notably, the murder and rape of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in August 2024 created a furore in the state. The then Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Abhishek Gupta and Indira Mukherjee have repeatedly been accused of dereliction of duty. They have been accused of influencing the investigation. There were repeated claims by the Left leadership at the time as to why more than one person was present at the spot. Indira Mukherjee held a press conference on behalf of the Kolkata Police in the wake of the incident. There were several discrepancies in the information she provided at the time. The victim's family has repeatedly claimed that the sheets on the body were changed. The police did not take any action against the accused when the miscreants broke into the hospital on the night of 14 August 2024.
