TMC Leader Attack Investigation Uncovers Party Rift Links

A new twist has emerged in the investigation into the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal's Sonarpur. In fact, many of the people arrested for attacking TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday (May 30, 2026) have been found to be linked to former TMC MLA from Sonarpur Lovely Maitra. Questions are now being raised whether this incident was just another case of violence or points to deep rifts within the party. In fact, the Bengal Police have arrested at least five people so far for the attack on Abhishek Banerjee. The arrested accused include Tapan Maity, Akash Gayan, Nirmalya Sengupta alias Joy, Kajal Das, and Debashish Dutta. Among these accused, Tapan Maity and Akash were seen in videos related to the incident, which have been taken into custody by the police as part of the investigation. Maitra alias Tapan Sen, Nirmalya Sengupta, and Lovely Dutta are also said to be close to the former TMC MLA.
