Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee met Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday (12 August 2026) and demanded action against 20 rebel MPs of the party. He also appealed to him to take an early decision on the petition to cancel the membership of these rebel MPs. He also said that if the Lok Sabha Speaker does not take a decision within the stipulated time, the TMC will approach the Supreme Court on this matter. He said that the TMC had filed petitions against these rebel MPs under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution (Anti-Defection Law) in the month of June itself, but even after two months, no satisfactory reply was given. He said, "When the Parliament session of NDA started, I raised this issue before the Lok Sabha Speaker. I was asked to give a formal letter, which I submitted by 26 July. After this, I also went with Saugata Roy, Kirti Azad and Pratima Mondal to seek information about the action on this, but despite this, no action has been taken so far. These 20 rebel MPs have come to the election symbol of Mamata Banerjee. They have been openly asking for support from the public.
