Tripura Minister Narrowly Escapes Attack by Mob During Visit to Khowai District

Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma narrowly escaped a major attack on Sunday evening after a mob stormed a residence and pelted stones at him during a visit to Khowai district, police said. The incident occurred around 8 PM in the Mungiakami area, when the minister was attending an organisational meeting at the house of a party worker. According to preliminary reports, tension escalated shortly after news of Debbarma’s arrival spread, prompting a group of individuals to gather and launch a targeted assault using stones and slingshots. The minister and his security detail were forced to take shelter inside the house for nearly an hour as the mob vandalised the property and damaged approximately eight to ten motorcycles parked nearby. A vehicle from the minister’s convoy was also reportedly damaged in the violence. Police personnel from Mungiakami police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, ensuring the safe evacuation of the minister. While the property sustained significant damage, authorities confirmed that Debbarma did not suffer any physical injuries. Speaking to reporters after the incident, Debbarma alleged that the attack was a “premeditated and politically motivated” attempt to create unrest ahead of the elections. “In a democratic system, every political party must have its space to work for the people. Such violence is unacceptable,” he said. Security has been tightened across the Mungiakami area to prevent further escalation. Police have initiated an investigation to identify the attackers, including a local individual allegedly identified as the leader of the mob. No arrests have been made so far.
