The United Arab Emirates (UAE) rescued 22 people from a cargo vessel after a fire broke out in the Gulf of Oman, amid heightened tensions over shipping routes near Iran. In a statement posted on X on Sunday, November 8, the UAE National Guard said its Coast Guard unit launched the operation after receiving an emergency report from the vessel’s crew. The team located the ship, evacuated the 22 people, all of Arab nationalities, and provided first aid before transferring them to the relevant authorities. “All were in stable health,” the National Guard said, adding that the operation reflected its personnel’s readiness to handle maritime emergencies. Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an advisory about an incident involving a bulk carrier and military forces in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 18 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan, UAE. The agency said the crew’s condition, the extent of any vessel damage and the environmental impact had yet to be established. Authorities were aware of the incident, with investigations underway. The developments come against the backdrop of a wider dispute between Washington and Tehran over maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international shipping and global energy supplies. The waterway has remained a key issue in efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict. The United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28, followed by a ceasefire in April. However, confrontations resumed in July, while negotiations stalled despite a memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides in mid-June.
