Political activity has begun ahead of the Manipur Assembly election scheduled for February–March 2027 to elect all 60 members. Former minister and veteran political leader Nimaichand Luwang, along with Gokul Luwang, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at a ceremony held on Thursday at Thambal Shanglee, the BJP state headquarters in Imphal. The event was attended by State BJP President A. Sarda Devi, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh , Home Minister K. Govindas, and other senior leaders. Luwang is a seasoned politician who has won five times from the Wangkhem Assembly constituency in Thoubal district. In the 2012 Assembly elections , he contested from the same constituency on a Manipur People’s Party ticket but was defeated by Congress (I) candidate K. Meghachandra. Welcoming the new entrants, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh posted on Facebook: “I extend a warm welcome to former minister and senior political leader Nimaichand Luwang and Gokul Luwang to the BJP fold. Their decision to join the BJP reflects the growing confidence in the party’s vision of development, good governance, and a stronger Manipur. We remain steadfast in our commitment to serving the people and advancing the state’s progress and prosperity.”
