Kolkata: The latest report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and West Bengal Election Watch has presented a grim picture regarding the criminal background and low participation of women in the West Bengal Assembly Elections-2026. The report was released on the basis of an analysis of self-declared criminal cases and personal assets of 2920 candidates out of 2926 in the fray in both phases. According to the'Red Alert'report, this time 129 seats (44%) out of 294 assembly seats in the state have been declared'Red Alert '.'Red Alert'are those constituencies where three or more candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. In comparison, in the 2021 assembly elections, the number of such seats was 78 (27%). That is, an increase of about 17 percentage points in five years.
