KOLKATA: West Bengal is gearing up for assembly elections. The Election Commission has stepped up security measures in the state to prevent any untoward incident ahead of the first phase of polling. Strict restrictions have been imposed on the movement of two-wheelers (bikes and scooters) across the state to ensure peaceful and transparent polling. As per the Election Commission's order, riding of bikes or scooters is prohibited in all 152 assembly constituencies in the first phase from 6 pm to 6 am. This rule has come into effect from Tuesday and will continue till April 23 (polling day). A total ban has been imposed on bike rallies with an aim to ensure that bikes are not used to disturb the election process or intimidate voters. The Commission believes that such rallies often cause violence and tension.
