West Bengal Assembly Elections: Security Downgraded Outside TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's House in Kolkata

West Bengal Assembly Elections: Security Downgraded Outside TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's House in Kolkata

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 6 (ANI): As power equations changed in West Bengal, so did the security set-up outside TMC MP Abhsishek Banerjee's house in Kolkata . The area has seen considerable downgrade in the security for the MP with residents of the area now free to move around. A local, Sourav Banerjee, on Wednesday, highlighted a significant shift in the security situation in his area, previously marked by heavy police presence for TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. According to a local, Sourav Banerjee, the politician had not contributed to the community's welfare in the past but built a huge building for herself. However, Sourav praised the recent improvements in security and the positive changes the locality has experienced. "There used to be 300-350 policemen here just for an MP... Look at the situation now, the atmosphere is calm. People can walk on the roads, but earlier we used to have trouble. This is Abhishek Banerjee's house. He has built such a big building, but he hasn't done anything for us. He used to threaten us, but people are living peacefully now. We are in a very good situation right now. The change that has been brought is a very good thing. The security here has improved," Sourav told ANI. Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a stern directive to the West Bengal Chief Secretary (CS), Director General of Police (DGP), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to ensure 'zero tolerance' toward any incidents of post-poll violence in the state. The ECI directive came after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Asansol's Godhuli area was allegedly vandalised on Monday after the BJP recorded a historic win in the assembly elections. Unknown miscreants vandalised the TMC office, leaving the premises heavily damaged, with furniture, flags, posters and banners torn down. This is the second alleged incident of vandalism of the TMC office. Meanwhile, the BJP won a spectacular 207 seats in the assembly polls, ending TMC's 15-year rule. The party is making preparations for the oath-taking ceremony of its first government in West Bengal. In Bhabanipur, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee by a vote margin of over 15,000 votes. Adhikari got 73917 votes while Mamata got 58812. In Nandigram, Adhikari defeated TMC's Pabitra Kar by a margin of 9665 votes. Congress won two seats, while Humayun Kabir's AJUP was restricted to two seats. CPI(M) managed to win only one seat. Despite the BJP's sweeping seat victory, the vote share revealed a more competitive undercurrent. The party secured 45.84% of the vote, while the TMC followed closely with 40.80%, highlighting that the electoral battle remained fiercely contested at the grassroots level. The CPI(M) garnered 4.45%, and Congress secured 2.97%, while other smaller parties and independents collectively contributed around 4.28%. The numbers suggest that while the BJP translated its vote share into a decisive seat advantage, the Opposition retained a substantial voter base--pointing to a divided yet shifting electorate. (ANI)

Vietnamese President To Lam Holds Talks with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi

Vietnamese President To Lam Holds Talks with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi

New Delhi [India], May 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level bilateral meeting with Vietnamese President To Lam at Hyderabad House on Wednesday, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic calendar. The engagement followed a ceremonial welcome accorded to the visiting leader at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day, formally commencing his first State Visit to India. The President was received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi, a gesture highlighting the "growing strategic partnership" between the two nations. Amidst a vibrant cultural display featuring children in traditional attire, the reception set a cordial tone for the "wide-ranging discussions" scheduled between the two leaders, which are expected to span bilateral cooperation alongside critical regional and global issues. Prior to reaching the capital, President To Lam began his journey on Tuesday in Bodh Gaya, where he offered prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple. After being welcomed in Bihar by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, the leader, who also serves as the "General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam," flew to Delhi, where he was received by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai. The diplomatic momentum built further as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called on the President ahead of the primary summit. According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the duo exchanged views on strengthening the "multifaceted, comprehensive strategic partnership," with the Vietnamese leader expressing his keen interest in the formal dialogue with the Prime Minister. According to the MEA, this visit represents a "significant juncture" as both nations mark a decade of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership . Beyond the capital, the President's itinerary until May 7 includes a visit to Mumbai to attend a business forum at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and interact with state leadership to boost economic ties. These engagements reflect the evolution of "longstanding historical and civilisational ties" into a robust modern strategic relationship. (ANI)

Voter Dissatisfaction Evident as 'None of the Above' Votes Surge in Upper Assam's Tinsukia District

Voter Dissatisfaction Evident as 'None of the Above' Votes Surge in Upper Assam's Tinsukia District

A significant rise in ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) votes has brought to light a parallel narrative of voter dissatisfaction, indicating that a section of the electorate remained unconvinced by the available choices in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam. Official figures reveal that Doomdooma constituency recorded the highest number of NOTA votes in the district, with 4,864 voters opting for the provision, a noticeable increase compared to previous elections. The trend was not isolated, as other constituencies too reported substantial NOTA counts, with Makum registering 3,047 votes, Margherita 3,290, Digboi 2,697, and Tinsukia 2,407. Political observers view this pattern as a reflection of a growing tendency among voters to consciously reject candidates when none align with their expectations. Despite this undercurrent of discontent, the BJP’s electoral dominance remained unequivocal across the district. In Doomdooma, Rupesh Gowala secured a landslide victory, defeating Congress candidate Durga Bhumij by a margin of 55,382 votes, polling 86,009 votes against 30,627. In Sadiya, sitting MLA Bolin Chetia comfortably retained his seat with a margin of 41,749 votes, while in Margherita, Bhaskar Sharma registered a decisive win over Rajlor Dal’s Rahul Chetri by 55,317 votes. Similarly, Suren Phukan emerged victorious in Digboi with a margin of 41,073 votes, Sanjoy Kishan won Makum by 28,276 votes, and Pulak Gohain clinched the Tinsukia seat with a margin of 48,497 votes. The correspondent from Doomdooma noted that while the BJP’s emphatic margins underscore its entrenched support base in Upper Assam, the rise in NOTA votes signals a “quiet but meaningful expression of dissatisfaction” among a segment of voters. The results, therefore, present a layered mandate, one that firmly backs the ruling party’s leadership while simultaneously highlighting the electorate’s willingness to use NOTA as a democratic tool to voice disapproval in the absence of preferred alternatives.

Congress' AD Thomas Stuns Left Bastion in Kerala's 2026 Assembly Elections

Congress' AD Thomas Stuns Left Bastion in Kerala's 2026 Assembly Elections

Alappuzha (Keralam) [India], May 6 (ANI): In one of the biggest political upsets of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, Congress youth leader AD Thomas on Wednesday stormed into the Keralam Legislative Assembly by defeating senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) leader and sitting MLA PP Chitharanjan in the Left bastion of Alappuzha . The 30-year-old Kerala Students' Union (KSU) leader won the constituency with a massive margin of 21,015 votes, ending decades of Left dominance in the coastal constituency and emerging as one of the surprise faces of the election. Thomas secured 81,065 votes, while Chitharanjan managed 60,050 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and former Congress leader MJ Job finished a distant third with 15,373 votes. For Congress workers, the victory was more than just an electoral win; it was the rise of a grassroots fighter who battled poverty, political violence, and personal hardship before entering the Assembly. Born to Dominic Jackson and Akkamma at Arasarkkadavu in Mararikulam, Thomas grew up in a financially struggling family. At the age of 17, he stepped into the sea with his father as a fisherman to support the household. He also worked at a petrol pump, did fishing in traditional boats, and later took up construction work to make ends meet. Even while juggling jobs, Thomas continued his studies and earned money by taking tuition classes for school students. He completed his degree in History from St. Michael's College under the University of Kerala and entered student politics through KSU, eventually becoming the college union chairman and later KSU's Alappuzha district president. "My entry into politics was never something unexpected. From a very young age, I was interested in interacting with people and speaking among larger groups. However, my active involvement in organisational and political activities began while I was a student at St. Michael's College, Cherthala. That is where my active political and social journey started," AD Thomas told ANI. Known for his aggressive street politics and protest campaigns, Thomas became a familiar face in Congress agitations across Alappuzha . He reportedly faces 18 police cases linked to protests and political movements. During the Nava Kerala Yatra, Thomas had protested in front of the convoy of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and was allegedly assaulted by security personnel. A photograph showing Thomas with a blood-soaked face later went viral on social media, with supporters projecting him as a symbol of resistance against the ruling Left government. The image helped shape his political identity among youth workers, who began calling him "Porali" (fighter). "But this is not just my story. Over the last ten years in Kerala, from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, many young people and students have allegedly faced brutal attacks under the protection of the state machinery. Police and pro-government youth organisations have attacked them. Even today, thousands of youngsters in Kerala are living with injuries and trauma, unable to even get out of bed properly. The United Democratic Front and the Congress High Command gave me an opportunity to contest as a representative of all those people. I see myself only as their representative, and that is how I want to be seen," he added. Despite holding political positions, Thomas continued fishing and doing labour work to support his family. Unmarried and the eldest among three siblings, his journey from the shores of Alappuzha to the Assembly has now become one of the defining stories of Keralam's 2026 election. The scale of the victory has also shocked political observers, especially in a constituency where CPI(M) had traditionally enjoyed strong influence. In the 2021 Assembly polls, Chitharanjan had won the seat by over 11,000 votes. Five years later, the constituency witnessed a dramatic reversal led by a first-time candidate who built his campaign from the ground up. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party Cancels Contract with Indian Political Action Committee Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Elections

Lucknow : Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections, scheduled to be held in 2027, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party has decided to cancel its contract with political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC.) Notably, I-PAC was also TMC's political firm. The I-PAC team was supposed to be working specifically for the Samajwadi Party in seats where the margin of defeat was very low last time, reported NDTV. Reportedly, Akhilesh Yadav was not fully convinced about hiring I-PAC. The firm had made a presentation to the party leadership, reportedly at the suggestion of the Trinamool Congress, but discussions did not move beyond that stage and no formal agreement was signed. The development comes after the arrest of I-PAC director Vinesh Chandel by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged financial irregularities linked to a coal smuggling case in West Bengal, reportedly Moneycontrol. Notably, the Delhi court on April 30, 2026 granted regular bail to Chandel, after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) didn’t opposed the plea. "The deal was already in turmoil after the Election Commission raided our offices and the director (Vinesh Chandel) was arrested," NDTV quoted a source as saying. However, the party may still consider other professional agencies, possibly led by former I-PAC associates, as it gears up for the 2027 Assembly elections.

Congress Leaders Meet Sonia Gandhi to Discuss Kerala Chief Minister Candidacy After Thumping Victory

New Delhi [India], May 6 (ANI): Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday reached the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi as the party is yet to decide on Keralam's next Chief Minister after the thumping victory in the assembly elections. KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala are among the key contenders in the race for Keralam's top position, alongside Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan. Earlier, Chennithala said, "The party will take a final decision on all these issues. In Keralam, we got a spectacular victory... Now, the other things will be decided by the Congress high command. There are several leaders in the Congress party, but whatever the high command decides, all the Congress leaders will accept it." Congress has begun the process of government formation in Keralam, where the party-led UDF registered a thumping victory in the assembly polls, winning 102 seats in the 140-member assembly. Sources said that the party has appointed its leaders, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, as observers to know the views of its newly elected MLAs to decide the choice of Chief Minister. Earlier, KC Venugopal expressed his gratitude to the people of Keralam, stating, "The people of Kerala have bestowed their faith in the Congress party and UDF alliance. They have faith in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Kharge ji." The UDF's win has been seen as a major political shift in the state, reflecting the growing support for Congress and its allies while reinforcing the party's influence under the guidance of Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Meanwhile, posters of Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal were put up along Trivandrum Road on Tuesday as part of celebrations following the Congress-led United Democratic Front's (UDF) sweeping victory in the Keralam Assembly 2026 elections, even as speculation intensifies over the alliance's chief ministerial candidate. West Bengal Election Violence: BJP Celebrations Marred by Vandalism and Rival Party Office Attacks

No matter how many Bengali sons-in-law in new Dhoti-Punjabi dress celebrate the victory, appeal to the opposition leaders and workers not to attack the office or talk about revenge, it is meaningless to the Bengal BJP on the ground. Even the newly defeated Chief Minister said badla nai badla that day, but her loyal forces did not listen. No one cares about the victorious Prime Minister this time. The overzealous and disciplined winners are proving that they are no different from the Trinamool by making the setting theory relevant again. The Left's party offices were vandalized, set on fire, looted and occupied in every neighbourhood of the state after the Trinamool won in 2011. The BJP is following the trend of post-election political violence, less the deadly attacks on the victors than the Trinamool. In fact, they have been inflamed by the migrants from the Trinamool and the BJP. These anti-migrant political party leaders, who are once the most influential in Bengal, are the anti-Trinamool.

From education to health, from industry to work, from civil defense to law and order, the grass-roots government has set new precedents in every field. Samajwadi Party Aims to Win Uttar Pradesh Elections by Targeting Backward and Minority Votes

LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party wants to cross the threshold of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh through the PDA (backward, Dalit and minority) votes. The Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party chief and UP minister has hit out at SP president Akhilesh Yadav over his poll strategy, saying that the PDA is coming, showing signs of a king. In the UP assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party is adopting the same strategy to garner votes of backward, Dalit and minority communities as it did in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections, the alliance of SP and Congress won 43 seats and got 43.52% of the votes. The rival NDA won 36 seats and got 43.69%, while in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the total of 64 seats, Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the PDA, is working on 80 seats to unite the PDA against the PDA.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Seeks Alliance with AIADMK to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Seeks Alliance with AIADMK to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 6 (ANI): As Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam attempts to stitch an alliance to cross the 118 majority mark, the party's General Secretary N Anand on Wednesday met with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). Other senior TVK leaders have also contacted the AIADMK General Secretary. TVK, which stands at 108 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly, is just 10 short of the 118 halfway majority mark. Congress , with five seats had already extended its support. However, Vijay still needs five more seats to form a government. Vijay could also abandon the Congress in favour of the AIADMK which has significantly more seats. The Congress ' long association with the DMK is not helping its case despite its leaders itching to ally with Vijay . If TVK manages to ally with AIADMK, which won 47 seats in the assembly election, they will comfortably cross the halfway mark without needing the Congress 's support. Earlier, AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam said that his party will take the final decision over allying with TVK. Shanmugam said, "The party has to take the decision" while speaking to reporters as AIADMK MLAs arrived at his residence in Chennai, amidst buzz of 'talks' between party General Secretary Edapaddi K Palaniswami and TVK chief Vijay . Reports suggest that there is a faction within the AIADMK that is inclined to support Vijay and his party by offering support to him. There have also been reports that these MLAs are not too happy with Edappaddi Palaniswami's leadership. TVK's Chief Vijay also sought time from Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to meet him as part of the process for government formation, TVK sources said. On the other side, Congress is ready to end one of its longest-standing alliances as it gears up to support TVK and Vijay with its 5 MLAs to form the government in Tamil Nadu. Congress MP and Senior leader Manickam Tagore whose outburst against the DMK's denial of power sharing in the state had become the talk of the alliance prior to the polls justified his party's stand. "The verdict has gone against the DMK government. Half the ministers in the Cabinet have lost their seats. We faced collateral damage for no fault of ours. Now, BJP is eyeing Tamil Nadu. The question before us is clear, should we stand with those rejected by the people's verdict, or should we unite with the force that fought against BJP and fight to stop BJP from ruling Tamil Nadu?" he posted on X. TVK Chief Vijay had written to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge seeking support and indications are that the Congress has agreed and is likely to pull allies VCK and the Left parties along with it. With Rahul Gandhi's personally calling Vijay on Tuesday night the Congress ' support is a foregone conclusion, now the ball is really in Vjay's court if he chooses to take the Congress along or opt for fracturing the AIADMK. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut Backs Mamata Banerjee's Claims of Election Rigging, Supports Her Decision Not to Resign

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut Backs Mamata Banerjee's Claims of Election Rigging, Supports Her Decision Not to Resign

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 6 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday expressed support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee 's recent remarks about the BJP of "looting" the democratic process, affirming that the Election Commission's role in the polls was questionable. Raut acknowledged Banerjee's claims about rigged Assembly elections and voter deletions, stating that her ongoing protests, both in power and opposition, reflect her stance against injustice. He also backed her decision not to resign, citing her moral victory. "What Mamata Banerjee said yesterday, I have heard and understood her words. The first thing Mamata Banerjee said was that the Election Commission is the villain, and the villain won the election... She says that 100 Assembly seats were rigged; this is true. It is also true that the names of lakhs of people were deleted. All these things that Mamata Banerjee said are true. Mamata Didi says that she will not resign because she has achieved a moral victory. Mamata Didi has always been a movement, whether she is the Chief Minister, in power, or in the opposition. Even while being the Chief Minister, Mamata Didi has protested on the streets many times against the Central Government..." Sanjay Raut emphasises the INDIA bloc's is always with Mamata Banerjee , noting that leaders like Uddhav Thackeray and Rahul Gandhi have personally reached out to reaffirm their support following the election results. "Uddhav Thackeray has spoken with her. Rahul Gandhi has also spoken. I saw there are many leaders in the India Bloc who spoke to her. We will now have to struggle harder... INDIA alliance is always with Mamata ji and will always be. Rahul ji also said yesterday that if anyone is happy that Mamata didi lost, then do not express this happiness, this is the defeat of the country, of democracy," said Raut. Earlier on Tuesday, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sparked a firestorm by firmly rejecting calls for her resignation, despite the BJP securing a commanding two-thirds majority. The election results, which saw the BJP surge to 207 seats and relegate the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to just 80, mark a seismic shift in Bengal's political landscape. However, the transition of power appears far from seamless. Addressing the media, a defiant Banerjee accused the Election Commission (EC) and the BJP of "looting" the democratic process. Despite the numbers, she insisted that her party remains the moral victor. "I will not resign. I did not lose. I will not go to Raj Bhavan... the question doesn't arise. We didn't lose the election. They can defeat us officially through the Election Commission, but morally we won the election," Mamata Banerjee asserted. The TMC chief labelled the Chief Election Commissioner the "villain" of the election, claiming Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were tampered with and citing suspicious 80-90% battery charges. (ANI)

DMK Slams Congress for Backing TVK in Tamil Nadu Government Formation

DMK Slams Congress for Backing TVK in Tamil Nadu Government Formation

The MK Stalin-led DMK has slammed its INDIA bloc ally Congress, calling it “backstabbers”. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said that his party did not endorse the support of Congress to Vijay’s TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The Congress made the decision to back TVK at a late-night Parliamentary Affairs Committee meeting. Soon after the meeting, Congress MP KC Venugopal said: “The INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government that is committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit. The INC is determined not to have the BJP and its proxies run the government in Tamil Nadu in any manner.” TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress for support to form a Government in Tamil Nadu. He has spoken about drawing inspiration from Perumthalaivar Kamaraj as well, in his political mission. Now, ADMK with 43 seats is willing to offer support to TVK. Whose support will TVK take,” he asked. The Congress fought the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in alliance with the DMK. DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan also hit out at the Congress, saying that their were talks within the Congress of some people wanting to support Vijay “from the beginning”. “Congress is doing it in every state, and ultimately, they are losing in all of them. They were wiped off in Delhi and West Bengal. They have no chance in Maharashtra. They are doing something which will close their party.” #WATCH | Chennai : On TVK to form government in Tamil Nadu in alliance with Congress, DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan says, “Right from the beginning, there were talks that some people wanted to support Vijay and join his party. The party appears to be heading toward its sharpest internal split since the passing of J Jayalalithaa. As per sources The Indian Express spoke to, serious differences surfacing within the party over whether it should back Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay in forming a coalition government. Sources across political circles indicated that the situation is also being influenced by the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership’s push to block the Indian National Congress from becoming part of the government in Tamil Nadu. Top AIADMK leaders said the BJP leadership in New Delhi is uneasy about the possibility of a Congress-supported TVK administration taking shape in Chennai, particularly in the backdrop of the Congress’s recent gains in neighbouring Kerala. With TVK securing 108 seats and remaining short of the 118-seat majority threshold, coalition support has become essential. Political developments suggest the BJP is backing attempts to steer the AIADMK toward extending support to Vijay, rather than allowing Congress and Left parties to emerge as key supporters of the next government. The situation escalated further on Tuesday night when senior AIADMK leader Leema Rose Martin publicly confirmed that discussions were taking place between TVK and AIADMK. The disclosure, whether inadvertent or otherwise, quickly drew attention because her son-in-law, Aadhav Arjuna, is considered one of Vijay’s close political aides and is believed to be directly involved in the talks on behalf of TVK. Her son is also an MLA from Puducherry and is part of the NDA. News agency PTI, meanwhile, reported that Vijay will take oath on May 6.

TMC Suffers Crushing Defeat in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur District

TMC Suffers Crushing Defeat in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur District

Kharagpur: At this time, the Trinamool candidates have not been able to save their faces! On the contrary, they have lost by a huge margin in all those places. Since the results were announced, the question has been raised - was the candidate in the election this time a minor issue? The district and state leadership of the TMC has failed to understand the pulse of the people? What did the IPAC do? The Trinamool leaders have no answer to any question. But the BJP claims that the people gave 15 years to the TMC. But they did not work for development. So the mandate went to the BJP. Out of 15 seats in Paschim Medinipur district, the TMC changed candidates in 7 seats. Out of these, it did not field candidates in 6. Out of them, the net result was zero. Not a single candidate won after changing their faces. On the contrary, all the candidates lost by a margin of 10 to 33 thousand votes. With this candidate, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and party's general secretary Abhishek Banerjee explained that apart from her, the people will not be able to find a candidate for whom the image of the people will be repeated.

I hope that a peaceful relationship between India and Bangladesh will be built." Congress Faces Backlash Over Alleged Alliance with TVK in Tamil Nadu

Congress Faces Backlash Over Alleged Alliance with TVK in Tamil Nadu

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 6 (ANI): Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader TKS Elangovan on Wednesday slammed the Congress , amidst party's alliance rumours with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to ANI, Elangovan stated that there were talks within the Congress from the beginning, where some people were willing to ally with TVK. He added that the Grand Old Party followed the same approach in other states and was wiped out from both Delhi and West Bengal. The DMK leader stressed that such tactics by Congress would "close their party." "Right from the beginning, there were talks that some people wanted to support Vijay and join his party. Congress is doing it in every state, and ultimately, they are losing in all of them. They are wiped off in Delhi and West Bengal. They have no chance in Maharashtra. They are doing something which will close their party," he said. TVK, which stands at 108 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly and is just 10 short of the 118 halfway majority mark, is more likely to ally with smaller parties like the Congress and the Left front. TVK's Chief Vijay also sought time from Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to meet him as part of the process for government formation, TVK sources said. Earlier, Vijay also addressed the Tamil Nadu people in an X post for the first time after the election results came in. He recalled the mockery that had greeted TVK's launch while crediting the people of Tamil Nadu for the party's outstanding result in the polls. Amidst all these developments, tensions rose within the Secular Progressive Alliance, as DMK called Congress "backstabber" amidst the rising speculations of the grand old party supporting TVK in Tamil Nadu. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress , calling the decision "myopic" and accusing them of having "backstabbed" INDIA alliance partners. "I think this is a very short-sighted, myopic stand taken by the Congress , which they will regret. The 2029 big elections are coming, where we were very confident that we will be able to remove the BJP. But now, because of this decision by the Congress , it has made them a very unstable partner. The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted," he said. Parallely, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar accepted the resignation of the outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin and his Council of Ministers. The Governor has requested Stalin to continue in office till the new government takes over. A debutant party not only breaking the DMK-AIADMK duopoly but potentially leading government formation marks a profound shift in voter sentiment. Regardless of how government formation plays out, the coming days will be decisive. Whether it is a TVK- Congress understanding, a broader coalition of smaller parties, or some combination of both, the era of TVK is here, but the shape of its government remains to be seen. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP of Vote Theft, Says Party Would Not Win Even 140 Seats if Fair Elections Held

Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP of Vote Theft, Says Party Would Not Win Even 140 Seats if Fair Elections Held

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, May 6, alleged that every sixth BJP MP in the Lok Sabha secured his or her seat through “vote chori” and asked if they should be labelled “ghuspethiya” in that party’s own parlance. Gandhi also claimed that the BJP would not be able to win even 140 seats today in the Lok Sabha if fair elections are held. “Through vote theft, sometimes individual seats are stolen, and at other times, an entire government. Of the 240 BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha, roughly every sixth MP secured seat through vote chori,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said in a post in Hindi on X. “They are not hard to identify – should we, in the BJP’s own parlance, label them ‘ghuspethiya’? And what of Haryana ? There, the entire government itself is an ‘ghuspethiya’. The very institutions they keep in their pockets – the ones they manipulate to distort voter lists and the electoral process – are themselves ‘remote-controlled’,” Gandhi said, in a scathing attack on the BJP. “Their real fear is the truth. For if fair elections were to be held, they would not be able to win even 140 seats today,” he said. On Tuesday, Gandhi had termed the BJP’s victory in Bengal and Assam assembly polls a “theft” of the mandate, and a big step forward in the saffron party’s mission to “destroy” Indian democracy. Gandhi has also come out in support of the TMC, which has been trounced by the BJP in the polls, and urged those gloating over the loss of Mamata Banerjee’s party to put petty politics aside. “Some in the Congress, and others, are gloating about TMC’s loss. They need to understand this clearly – the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a big step forward by the BJP in its mission to destroy Indian democracy,” Gandhi had said in a post on X. “Put petty politics aside. This is not about one party or another. This is about India,” he said in his post. The BJP ousted Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal and captured power for the third time in a row in Assam in results of assembly polls declared on Monday.

US Ends Operation Epic Fury, Suspends Naval Effort Amid Ongoing Tensions in Strait of Hormuz

Washington, Dec 6: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that Operation Epic Fury is now effectively over. However, the fragile ceasefire remains in place as attacks continue in the Strait of Hormuz. Hours after the announcement, President Donald Trump said that the US will suspend Project Freedom. This is a naval effort aimed at navigating commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to see if a deal can be reached with Iran. Meanwhile, Operation Epic Fury is a nearly two-month-long military operation that began the US-Israel conflict with Iran. At the White House, Rubio said, this operation is now complete. We have completed that phase of the operation. Instead of this operation, the US has now taken a defensive stance. The main objective of this new approach is to restore trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz. This route, though significantly more heavily logged, has become a major US-Israeli conflict.

Constitutional Crisis or Political Stalemate: Mamata Banerjee's Refusal to Resign as Chief Minister

Mamata Banerjee has lost the election, but is not ready to leave the chair. Questions about her not resigning have not been limited to political debate, but have become a subject of deep constitutional debate. In the Indian federal structure, the office of the Chief Minister is not only political but also constitutional responsibilities. If Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refuses to accept the demand for resignation after the completion of the assembly term and despite the defeat in the elections, can there really be a constitutional crisis? The answer to this question is not directly in "yes" or "no," but it depends on the circumstances, legal provisions, and the role of the institutions. In this legal analytical article, we will understand how the Constitution views this situation, what the role of the governor and the judiciary can be, and what the way forward. The post of the chief minister and the constitutional structure as we know it is the head of the executive of the states according to the Indian Constitution is the chief minister. Under Article 164 of the Constitution, the appointment of the governor is not purely based on the will of the assembly.

Thiruvananthapuram ( Keralam ) [India], May 6 (ANI): Following the recent Keralam assembly election results, Communist Party of India ( CPI ) leader and MP P Sandosh Kumar on Wednesday said that they need "new faces" to lead the Opposition, describing his party's poll performance as a "humiliating and embarrassing" defeat. Acknowledging the setback, Sandosh stated that while the defeat was humiliating and embarrassing, the Communist movement in Kerala has a history of overcoming such failures and will certainly make a comeback after a high-level committee reviews the post-poll scenario. Speaking to ANI, Sandosh said, "Since the high-level committee consisting of senior party leaders will review the post-poll scenario and what needs to be done. We lost this election badly. It was humiliating and embarrassing. As far as the Communists in Kerala are concerned, we have seen many failures. We have also successfully overcome them. For sure, we will come back. We need new faces to lead the Opposition in Keralam ." Sandosh attributed the LDF 's electoral losses in Kerala to a mix of anti-incumbency and "mispropaganda," while announcing that the coalition will adopt a new style of functioning. "It was a common setback where the anti-incumbency factor affected all Left parties in Keralam . LDF lost here, and this was a combination of a number of factors, like anti-incumbency and mispropaganda against LDF . I cannot single out one issue. We will take stock of the issue, and in the coming days, you will see a new style of functioning of LDF ," said Sandosh. Meanwhile, Congress has begun the process of government formation in Keralam where the party-led UDF registered a thumping victory in the assembly polls. Sources said that the party has appointed its leaders, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, as observers to know the views of its newly-elected MLAs to decide the choice of Chief Minister. The Congress won 63 seats in the 140-member Keralam assembly. Its allies also performed well, with IUML getting 22 seats. Congress-led UDF ousted LDF from power after 10 years. (ANI)

BJP Gains Upper Hand in Chamba Panchayati Raj Elections as Congress Considers Alternative Strategy

Chamba: After the bugle was sounded for the Panchayati Raj elections, the BJP seems to be one step ahead of the Congress party. BJP leaders were seen in the nomination process along with party supported candidates in the municipal elections. Congress leaders were seen absent during this time. The list of candidates for the Zila Parishad elections has been released by the BJP. On the other hand, now the leaders of the Congress party are saying to field candidates in the elections by mutual consent instead of the party symbol. The list of candidates fielded by the BJP in the election campaign is now expected to increase the infighting. Those who have been associated with the party for a long time and whose names are not in the party list at the last moment have been hurt. Now only time will tell which BJP manages to wave its saffron in the 11 posts of the Zila Parishad or the Congress manages to win under its strategy.
